Why a license check matters for water heater work
Water heater work involves gas, venting, water pressure and electrical connections. In California, plumbing contractors are licensed by the CSLB under the C-36 Plumbing classification. Every pro we list holds an active C-36 license.
Permits and seismic strapping in California
California law requires new and replacement water heaters to be braced, anchored or strapped against earthquake motion, with the California Plumbing Code as the minimum standard (California Health & Safety Code ยง19211 (water heater bracing)). In the City of San Diego, a water heater replacement (except tankless types) is covered by a simple no-plan Plumbing/Gas Permit (City of San Diego, Plumbing/Gas Permit).

Go to the CSLB Check a License page at cslb.ca.gov, enter the contractor's license number, and confirm the status is active, the classification fits the job (C-36 is Plumbing), and a bond and workers' comp status are shown.
Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in San Diego?
In the City of San Diego, a water heater replacement (except tankless) can use a simple no-plan Plumbing/Gas Permit; tankless replacements need a plan-required permit. Other cities and unincorporated areas issue their own permits, so ask your installer to pull one.
