Tankless water heater repair in San Diego County

By the VettedHeater team · Last updated October 23, 2026 · How we verify

If your tankless water heater has no hot water, runs lukewarm, or shows an error code, the usual causes are scale buildup, a gas or venting problem, or a failed part. Check the error code in your owner's manual first. Gas, venting and circuit-board work should go to a licensed C-36 plumber; below are the San Diego County pros we've checked who list tankless repair.

Licensed tankless repair pros in San Diego County

These pros hold an active CSLB C-36 Plumbing license (checked October 22, 2026) and list tankless repair or service on their own websites. Nobody pays to be listed. Other pros in our San Diego County directory may also repair tankless units, so ask when you call. Regions: City of San Diego, North County, East County.

Quick checks before you call

Common tankless problems and what causes them

No hot water or the unit won't ignite

Start with the quick checks above. If power, gas and water are all on and the unit still shows a code or won't fire, that usually points to a gas supply, venting, ignition or control-board fault, which is work for a licensed pro.

Hot-then-cold bursts ("cold water sandwich")

A short burst of cold water between hot ones can happen when a tap is turned off and back on, because the unit has to restart. If it's new or getting worse, mention it to your pro, especially if you have a recirculation system.

Low flow or fluctuating temperature

Scale inside the heat exchanger and a dirty inlet filter both restrict flow. Rinnai says mineral build-up should be flushed at least once a year (Rinnai, "How do I flush clean my Rinnai tankless water heater?"), and Navien recommends descaling at least once a year (Navien, "How to Descale Your Tankless Water Heater"). If you're overdue, start with our tankless water heater maintenance guide, or see how to flush a tankless water heater.

Error codes

Every brand uses its own codes, so use your exact model's manual or the manufacturer's support site: Rinnai, Navien, Rheem and Noritz. Rinnai's SENSEI RX manual, for example, uses a Service Soon (SS) code to show it's time to flush and service the unit (Rinnai, SENSEI RX Residential Installation and Operation Manual (100000839), Water Quality section).

Leaks, noises and gas smells

A leak at a fitting or valve can often be repaired; a leaking heat exchanger usually can't. If you smell gas: SDG&E says to leave the area immediately and, from a safe location, call SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 or 9-1-1. Don't light a flame or switch lights or appliances on or off (SDG&E, Gas leaks).

Repair or replace?

Weigh the unit's age, whether the heat exchanger itself has failed, and whether the warranty still covers the part. If you decide to replace it, see tankless installation in San Diego for the job itself and how to choose a tankless water heater for the unit.

What tankless repair costs

Repair prices depend on the part and the time it takes, and we haven't found a reliable published San Diego price for tankless repairs, so we don't quote one. Get 2 or 3 written quotes that name the part and the labor. For the cost of a new unit, see the tankless water heater cost guide.

Warranty: check it before repairs

Find your model and serial number and check your manufacturer's warranty terms before paying for a part. Rinnai's SENSEI RX manual says replacement of components due to water quality damage is not covered by the warranty (Rinnai, SENSEI RX Residential Installation and Operation Manual (100000839), Water Quality section), and Navien says descaling done incorrectly that damages the heater could void the warranty (Navien, "How to Descale Your Tankless Water Heater").

Permits for repairs

In the City of San Diego, gas line repairs and water piping repairs can use the Simple "No-Plan" Plumbing/Gas Permit, but tankless water heater replacements are excluded from it (City of San Diego, Plumbing/Gas Permit). Unincorporated areas go through the County (County of San Diego PDS, Building Division (unincorporated areas)). Ask your pro whether your repair needs a permit and who pulls it.
